About

Vivian Oystrick, PhD, MSW, RSW

I am a Registered Social Worker, Professor, Researcher, and Program Evaluation Consultant.

With 24 years of practice as a Registered Social Worker, I am committed to the wellbeing and resilience of people living in Sudbury. With a diverse educational and professional background, I have cultivated extensive experience and practical knowledge in child welfare, children’s mental health, research and program evaluation methods, counselling and intervention strategies, and teaching.

I hold a PhD in Human Studies and Interdisciplinarity and a Master of Social Work from Laurentian University. My doctoral research explored the feasibility, suitability, and benefits of an arts-based mindfulness group program for adolescent mothers.

My teaching career includes my current role as a full-time professor in the Social Service Worker Program at Cambrian College. I have also served as a part-time professor at Cambrian College and as a sessional instructor at Laurentian University. I have taught courses such as Social Work Practice, Group Dynamics, Family Dynamics, Social Services, and Recording and Observation. My teaching approach fosters an engaging and inclusive learning environment, utilizing various modalities to address the diverse needs of students.

Before joining Cambrian College, I spent nearly five years as the Youth Research and Evaluation eXchange (YouthREX) Northern Hub Manager at Laurentian University’s School of Social Work. In this role, I provided research and evaluation support to non-profit youth sector organizations to enhance youth engagement and well-being. I developed and delivered workshops, webinars, and online courses for youth sector professionals across Ontario, establishing positive relationships with various social work organizations and valuing university-community research partnerships.

With 24 years of practice as a Social Worker, I am committed to the wellbeing and resilience of people living in our Sudbury community. I have professional experience and practical knowledge in areas such as child welfare, children’s mental health, therapeutic services, and social research methods. As an active member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the International Association for Social Work with Groups, I am committed to ongoing professional development and staying abreast of current trends and best practices in social work.
